Do one thing, and take a step

Once you decide what it is that you want to achieve this year – no matter how small, or large it may be; do something that will take you in that direction.

It’s easy to overwhelm ourselves with what we want out of life if you are someone with big dreams, but start by choosing to take one thing and work to see that accomplished. I suggest we make that one thing big, and then work it back into steps. Look at what you need to do to get there. Every destination requires some level of steps to get there.

Think about it… to gain access to a flat on the fifth floor, you are required to climb a minium of five floors to get there, and depending on the structure of the building you either need to take five set of stairs, or sometimes 10, or sometimes more.

Ask yourself these few questions to help you achieve your goal:

1. Where am I?

2. Where do I want to be?

3. What steps are required to get there?

Choose do so one thing today, but be careful… do NOT mistake activity for productivity, and always check your progress.

Are you where you want to be in life?

I came across the video below through a friend’s Facebook page. I wanted to highlight it, as it inspired me to think about the things in life that I value? We are not just human doers; we are human beings and in order to be who we are, we must know what that looks like. Sounds simple, but it’s shocking how many of us don’t know this stuff because if we did, then our lives would look pretty different from what they look like now.

Now don’t get me wrong, sometimes live takes twists and turns, and some things cannot be undone, but I’m not focusing on the end result as much as trying to get myself and you (if you so desire) to think about your life each day and reassess your priorities in life. Who says we need to be in an industry for 40 years and that is what makes us a success? It’s only a success if it was your decision in the first place, but far to often we make decisions based on fear.

‘What will that person think if I…’

‘But what if I take a step and it doesn’t work…”

‘What if…’

‘What if…’

What if it works!?

Our lives are driven by many factors, but whatever drives you is taking you to a destination. Do you know where your decisions are taking you? Have you thought about it?

Many of us get on the train, buss or plane and hop to work every day without thinking much about anything else except that we are going to do a job that we don’t have any real interested in, and then coming home to start living our lives – only by that point we have no more energy to do what we really  love to do because we’ve spent it already doing something out of obligation rather than desire; or at least without any real strategy behind it.

Just because we can…

I’m not sure if many of you reading this, know me other than the writer behind The Social Exchange, or the chick who writes a bunch of posts on business, social media and leadership? If anyone doesn’t know me at all and interested in finding out more about how it changed my life; you can read that here, on The Good Web Guide website.

Tonight’s post came out of a desire to find a place where I could talk about the above-mentioned areas, which I am passionate about, and The Social Exchange was a place where I could do that away from previous blogs where I have shared other kinds of posts (also motivational) – it seems I am challenged to write anything outside of motivational;  when it comes to writing for myself. However, today I have been inspired and encouraged to write this post, just because I can.

Sometimes structure is good, and writing formal posts that address business is great, but there are also times where we can get stuck and in a rut and that my friend is why I am waffling on, in this post, to help myself more than anyone, break out.

Life is multifaceted, and I am too. I want to write about fashion, and baking, and books, and fiction and heck I want to write about anything I want. Ideally I want to write about it and engage with some other folks on the subject of choice, hence why I called it the ‘social’ exchange.

So what’s stopping me?

That is the million dollar question.

This battle to be structured and stay on point is a tiresome battle at times. Maybe a girl just wants to have a little fun once a while and post pictures of cool things:

Like this…

..and this…

No not a ring. 😛 Just the box! Like cake in a jar, who doesn’t like good surprises? Or going to exotic places?

Do you want to know the cool thing about all this venting in this way?  This is exactly what many businesses need to do, open up! Shed a little humour, colour; show a splash of personality for crying out loud! Let’s have a little fun, like innocent, or a send a greeting card with moo. The most amazing thing about creating a space to do that – whether it be Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or a blog – is can express who we are as a team, as a company, as a individual for not other alternative reason that just because we can.

This is The SOCIAL Exchange, right?

Well I just exchanged something, how about you do too!

Rise to the top

I make mistakes; I fall. I get up, and I make more mistakes again the next day. It’s called life. When people say I live to learn, or I learn to live – they are both true.

Then, one day, I get up and I all those trips to the kirb make me bounce higher than ever before.

This is the day I call success.

This is the day before I do it all over again. The only difference is next time I fall, I’ll fall higher than ever before.

Often I imagine life’s journey like the kid on the trampoline – the deeper the fall, the higher the bounce. What limits us from rising to the top is simply, us. Our mindsets, our insecurities, our lack of fight and determination.

We are not defined by our past circumstances, or even today. We are defined by the thoughts we have, and the decisions (or lack of decisions) we make each day.

Great companies are not built by one man, but by a team of people who share a common thread, or purpose that doesn’t just create value, but also retains it. Little by little; piece by piece; brick by brick; This is how you can rise to the top in any aspect of life.

The key is to consistently provide value with persistence; and with time, grow.

Start Small, Think Big

So in the interest of sharing, helping and learning myself I thought I’d share my early morning doodle, in preparation for the week ahead. I honestly believe that if you don’t already think like this, then this will add great value to you; And if you do, well there’s no harm in being reminded, and encouraged of a good thought leadership principle.

It doesn’t matter if your Richard Branson, or Joe Blogs down the road. I am learning through experience that with everything there is a time and a season, and a process in between that no amount of wishing will take away – Nor do we really want it too.

If you follow me on Twitter you may have noticed a tweet of late which read:

“Focus is the key to progress, perseverance is the key to success; And all four are required in every endeavor.”

There is nothing quite like the feeling of accomplishment when you set yourself a goal for the day, week, and year, commit too and achieve that goal.

Best word of advice I ever got was, start from the desired end result and work back, and make the commitment to see your specific step reached.
